An absolutely gorgeous and scarce early 19th century enamel sautoir chain. This chain is from c.1830 and crafted in 18k gold. It features beautifully enameled colorful and exotic birds and flowers, and the enamel link alternates with the openwork link. The large scale of the links gives a striking look. It feels extra special to find a chain like this that has remained in its original form. Many didn't survive because they were often cut into multiple shorter chains over the years. One of the best parts of this chain is that it also converts into two different chain/necklaces- 16.5" & 33.25" ones (please see the photo #4.) The clasps for each one are in good working order. The full chain weighs 76.44 grams, and French import marks are seen on the tongue of the clasp. Shown here are some references of the antique sautoir chains similar to this one, from Henri Vever's book, 'French Jewellery of the Nineteenth Century'. (P. 279, P. 287, P. 295 & P. 302.) Overall the chain is in great condition with some minor wear to the enamel.
